Faith and the Funnel

The little girl was working away at a workstation in our computer lab when Addiction Services Program Director, Lucy DuBose walked by. The child looked up from her keyboard and asked, “What do you do here?” When Lucy said the she helped people to get off drugs, the child drew a sharp breath and beckoned Lucy closer with her finger. When Lucy leaned over to her, she said, “My mom’s on drugs. Can you help her?”

Of course there is no money, no medical insurance to help this little girl’s mom. There is a reason why our Fellowship House program is called “The Ambulance” by other helping agencies in the city. When no one else can help because you must have insurance or be able to pay or must have an address, or whatever, Lucy is often the last resort, the only one who can and will pick up where the rest of society leaves off. She is like a funnel, one social worker says. When no one else is able to help, people turn to Lucy.

Why is Fellowship House able to help when others give up? Because Jesus never gives up on people and Lucy knows that. She also has developed a network of followers of Jesus who will not require medical insurance or money or anything else before serving the lost.

You, too, are part of that network of loving support. Our ability to help that child’s mom depends on those who give funds or volunteer hours or donate services. That’s what enables Fellowship House to continue serving those funneled our way when no one else can help. Won’t you write a check today?  There are children who dearly love their moms that are hoping and praying that you will.
