It was a normal day of Reading Program, on a bright Friday afternoon at the Fellowship House. The kids were arriving and sitting down to a healthy snack prepared by the tutors, but we were still waiting for Robert.

Yes, you read that right! One little boy paid his mom five dollars to let him come to the After School Program at Fellowship House.

Every afternoon is an exciting time at Fellowship House when the kids come in with bright smiles and loud laughs, overjoyed to be here. But nearly every day there is one kid who comes in without a smile, their head down, looking like the world is on their shoulders. Normally it’s because they have been picked on or gone through a difficult situation at school. Each time they have a caring adult who listens to them, gives them guidance, comforts them, and reminds them that they are safe here. In a matter of minutes the child’s face lights up again and they run to play. It’s a fact that in order for children to learn and blossom, they need to feel safe. But we also know that God desires for each child to know His Fatherly care and protection- so it’s no coincidence that every child says they feel safe at Fellowship House! www.fellowshiphousecamden.org www.fellowshiphousecamden.org/volunteer

This year we are going through the Old Testament and children are learning such lessons as: how to give God your best, through the story of Cain and Abel, and how to obey God even when it’s hard, through the story of Noah and the Ark. But what’s really powerful is when they spread these lessons to their homes! Recently, we were talking with one of the parents, who was going through a particularly hard time. She said she was trying to trust God but kept struggling to follow Him. What got her through was her son reminding her of the lessons he had learned at Fellowship House. “He kept reminding me”, she said “that we had to keep following God, and that God wouldn’t let us down”. Blog Post: Opening the door of possibility It was a normal day of Reading Program, on a bright Friday afternoon at the Fellowship House. The kids were arriving and sitting down to a healthy snack prepared by the tutors, but we were still waiting for Robert. Robert’s grandfather would drop him off after school, but it was nearly time to begin tutoring. Finally Robert walked in with a big smile and we all welcomed him. “Why are you so late”, we asked. “My grandfather forgot to pick me up, so I used my grandmother’s phone to call him and ask him to come back for me, so I could come to Reading Program”, he said. Even though Robert struggled with reading, he clearly loved being at the Fellowship House and learning how to read!
