Fellowship House was founded in 1965 when Fran Casperson responded to a call for help to reach neighborhood children from a local church in South Camden. As she walked the streets, and saw the needs, her heart was broken for the inner city. As Fran prayed and saw God working in people’s hearts, she organized a weekly after-school Bible Club. For three years, planks laid across peach baskets provided seating for over 100 children in grades K-12
In 1969, settlement was made on a row house, in miserable condition but a good location at 1722 S. Broadway. When the family next door moved, they donated their house to Fellowship House. Years later when the storage company next to that couldn’t sell their property, it too was donated. Today these buildings house the gym and learning center. In 1990, a generous donor provided a commercial kitchen as an addition to our building. Time and again, God faithfully provided.
Today, Fellowship House offers an after-school program and a reading enrichment program for grades 1-4, summer camp for children entering grades 1-4, an evening program for youth and job training for teens. Fellowship House also provides evening programming to support the children’s parents. Through these ministries, supported by thousands of volunteers and donors who share the love of Christ in South Camden, Fellowship House has changed the lives of thousands of men, women and children.
